Projects The Initiative has been working hard with its private sector partner, Mactaggart & Mickel and the NHS, the owner of the site, and have now achieved planning consents for the former Lennox Castle Hospital to regenerate the site of the Lennox Castle Hospital with a substantial mix of 76 properties. The outline planning application shows a mixed use for the site, which is in line with the Adopted Local Plan. The Upper Site shows a greenbelt compatible use and the lower site, residential. The developer has replicated the oval theme, reminiscent of the existing residential development adjacent to the development site. These houses will offer an opportunity for those in the village to relocate as well as bringing new people into the village. This will mark a new chapter in the history of the former hospital site and a new chapter in village life, with the reinvestment of the net receipts from the site underpinning the regeneration programme. Earls Seat The remaining land which formed part of the former Somerville Nails site achieved planning consent for residential and business use. The site development proposals have been complex and the developer, AWG, now has a scheme which will deliver significant benefit to the village. The current phase will see the construction of 116 houses.
The development is aimed at creating a range of affordable family homes that will assist with the continued regeneration of the town, 102 of which will be for private sale and 14 will be developed in conjunction with a housing association for rent. The houses range from two bedroom semi detached to large four bedroom detached units with a balanced mix being constructed as the site is gradually developed. This mixed development in the centre of the village reinforces the community infrastructure and enables a strong link and housing choice to both residential sites. Enterprise Centre Development As part of the planning consent granted for the former Somerville Nail Works site, the Council required the developer, AWG, to include business space as part of the development. The Initiative led the discussions between the Council, Scottish Enterprise Dunbartonshire (SED), AWG and the Strathkelvin Development Company (SDC) to deliver this new business development in the village.
The £1.7M investment is a partnership between the Initiative, AWG, SDC and SED and has brought about much needed high quality business space to the village, encouraging employers to offer new jobs to the local community. We are proud to have delivered the Lennoxtown Enterprise Centre and Lennoxtown Initiative staff, as well as local businesses are now enjoying the benefits of working in the modern office suites as well as workshop units with two storey office pavilion. Celtic Training Facility
This world-class facility will be the base for Celtic’s entire training operation and will give a boost to the economy of East Dunbartonshire and particularly Lennoxtown. The move means two of Glasgow’s footballing giants – Rangers and Celtic – will have their training grounds within East Dunbartonshire. Rangers have been training at Murray Park in Milngavie for several yeas. Celtic was given the green light from the Council’s planning department in May and hopes to have the development complete by summer 2007. Celtic manager Gordon Strachan said: “I have already visited the site and seen the plans for the new training facility and academy at Lennoxtown and the whole project looks very exciting. Clearly, a club of Celtic’s size and stature requires quality facilities to match and the new development will certainly deliver these.”
Initial plans for the sports academy and training facility include: • Three natural grass full-size, UEFA-standard pitches
Work on the restoration of the High Church clock tower is completed and it is good to see an old Lennoxtown icon returning. A commemorative event is scheduled to take place on 16 March 2007 and we hope that as many members as possible of the local community will attend.
